Hey guys… I have a question. If purgatory is not a place, is heaven a place… and hell? Or are they all “spiritual states”? I’m confused :o s

I think your podcast is great! It makes me thing about stuff I hadn’t before, and, well, it makes Catholicism seem cool! Please keep it up!

    Hi Katie

Sorry for the confusion, Katie. Heaven, purgatory, hell, or Gerard’s bedroom are not physical places. There are no physical bodies that take up space in heaven, hell or purgatory. So like you mentioned, they are more spiritual states then a place. I used to think of purgatory as a big room between heaven and hell filled with souls but now I think of it more like a spiritual state of the soul in which a purification is occurring.

I hope this explains it a little better. If not, I’ll get an extra-strength bottle of Bible Lotion. :)

Hi Jose, thanks for getting back to me! Yeah, I definately had a “Doctors Waiting Room” idea of purgatory! I think I got a bit confused with Jesus having a physical body after the resurrection… but then in the Ascension I suppose, well, he might not need it in Heaven?!? I just though God gave us back our bodies in Heaven (not in a zombie-type way). That seems “Physical”, even if it’s an immortal kind of physical :o s

    Poor Gerard with no Bedroom…

Hola Katie, ok I don’t mean to make things more complex but you are right about body and soul in heaven. Here’s the whole enchilada with sour cream and tabasco sauce; In our creed we pray, “I believe in the resurrection of the body.” When we die there is a temporary separation of the body and soul (this is what I was referring to). In the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC:997) it says, “In death, the separation of the soul from the body, the human body decays and the soul goes to meet God, while awaiting its reunion with its glorified body.” When that hour comes Jesus said that on that last day all the dead will resurrect (John 6:39-40). It is here when the faithful will go glorified body and soul into heaven and the unfaithful will go body and soul into hell (this is what I think you were referring to). This is a cool topic to discuss and I think I’ll make a Bible Lotion segment out of it. I shall call it, “Extreme Body and Soul Makeover.” lol ;)
